LEXINGTON, S.C. — A Lexington County farm has agreed to pay a $1 million fine for hiring up to 350 workers in the United States illegally.
Court records obtained by The State newspaper (http://bit.ly/24t07p5 ) show federal investigators started looking into HW Group, LLC after two workers told them about the operation.
The newspaper reports HW Group is the land holding entity of Walter P. Rawl & Sons, a 91-year-old farming operation that grows vegetables.
Records show the farm would give $20,000 a week over six years to a man who would pay people in the county illegally to work at the farm.
HW Group attorney Debbie Barbier says the company is cooperating and agreed to use the federal worker verification program E-Verify even though by law it isn’t required to do so.
