Marion “Gayle” Wilkerson, 81, of Trafalgar, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014, with his family by his side at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin.

Gayle was born Jan. 30, 1933, in Johnson County to Fred and Opal “Pauline” (Walker) Wilkerson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Lee (Knoop) Wilkerson, whom he married Sept. 10, 1960, in Trafalgar.

Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Mark (wife, Kathy) Wilkerson of Greenwood and Brian (wife, Cheryl) Wilkerson of Franklin. He also will be missed by four grandchildren, Sandra Gieseking, Ashley and Geoff Wilkerson, and Kaelea Cheek; and four great-grandchildren.

Gayle was employed for 40 years as a senior scheduler with Diamond Chain in Indianapolis.

He was a 1951 graduate of Trafalgar High School and attended Butler University in Indianapolis before proudly serving his country as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from March 11, 1953, to March 4, 1955.

Gayle enjoyed spending time with his family and watching all kinds of sporting events, especially IU basketball. He also loved to watch his children and grandchildren in their sporting events.

Gayle was a member of First Christian Church of Morgantown and a past 60-year member of Trafalgar Christian Church, where he served as deacon, elder and trustee. Gayle was a member and treasurer of the Trafalgar American Legion post. He was also a member of Nineveh Masonic Lodge No. 317. Gayle served as trustee and treasurer for many years for First Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Franklin.

He served as Hensley Township trustee for more than 22 years until 1998. He was serving as precinct committeeman for the township.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, William “Bill” Wilkerson and Keith Wilkerson.

The Rev. Burt Brock will conduct a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, at First Christian Church of Morgantown, 2717 S. Morgantown Road. Friends were to call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, and at the church an hour prior to the service. Burial with military graveside rites will be at First Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Franklin.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home, Cremation and Personalization Center in Morgantown.
